Diving Giannutri island
Giannutri is the southernmost island of the Tuscan Archipelago and is located about 10 miles from Porto Ercole.
The name of the island comes from its crescent shape: the crescent moon identifies the goddess Artemis in Greek mythology, or Diana in the Roman world. The definitive name probably derives from the union of the archaic form Iana (to identify Diana) with the suffix -thri (probably of Etruscan origin), which was modified until becoming modern Giannutri.
The island is a protected natural area, both on land and at sea, which is located within the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago and is famous for its beauty and the clear water, as well as for the walls they descend vertically to abyssal depths.
Below you will find the most beautiful dives, perhaps to be enjoyed that you can enjoy during a relaxing full day.
And if instead you love depth and exploration, don’t miss the wrecks of the Anna Bianca and the Nasim wrecks.
The pearls of the Tyrrhenian Sea
An ancient legend tells that the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago were born when the Goddess Venus emerged from the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea and, in her haste to reach the shore, broke her precious pearl necklace: seven of them came back to the surface and turned into beautiful islands that now form the Tuscan Archipelago.
Giglio and Giannutri are two of the magnificent pearls of the Tyrrhenian Sea, an extraordinary mosaic of strictly protected natural sceneries. In 1996 the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago was born, under the sign of the protection and safeguarding of the environment.
The stretch of sea between Monte Argentario and the islands of Giglio and Giannutri is located on the southern border of another protected marine area, the Cetacean Sanctuary: this reserve is visited in the summer by an extraordinary variety of marine mammals, including (in the area north of Corsica and Sardinia) fin whales, sperm whales and pilot whales. Given that Monte Argentario is located in the extreme south of this reserve, these sightings are rather rare, but it is easy to spot spinner dolphins and bottlenose dolphins while sailing.
